Gear couplings are designed to handle motion functions that most other types of couplings cannot. They are also used in installations that require modifications and derating for operation. Additionally, they can also be modified for shear pin service, vertical applications, floating shaft type, electrical isolation, and limited axial play, while also allowing the addition of a drum or disc brake.

Operation of 6cm triple crowned gear coupling:

The gear teeth mesh in gear couplings is used for torque transmission and provides misalignment. The outer teeth of the gear are cut on the circumference of the hub. The misalignment capability of a gear coupling is due to backlash in the teeth, the fit of the major diameter, and crowning of the tooth surface. The backlash results in a loose fit resulting from the gear teeth being narrower than the gaps between the teeth. In addition to helping with misalignment capabilities, this clearance helps provide clearance for lube. The loose fit helps provide misalignment capability by allowing the sleeve to move off axis without binding against the hub teeth.

The curvature of the hub tooth surface, or crowning as it is popularly known, helps improve the capabilities of gear couplings. This camber can range from side crowns, toe crowns, and bevels on the sharpest edges. Not only this, it also helps improve the life of the teeth by enlarging the contact area along the root line. This reduces the pressure of torque forces. Not only this, it also helps prevent the sharp, square edges of the coupling tooth from digging in and jamming the coupling. To maintain a greater contact area between teeth during misalignment compared to standard crowning, triple row couplings are used to vary the radius of curvature along the tooth flank. It also helps reduce wear and tear. Triple row couplings have the crown applied to the hub teeth only with the sleeve teeth kept straight except for the chamfer on the edge of the minor diameter.

Capacity:

Gear couplings consume a lot of energy. This means that more torque is transmitted per joint space and mass than with other joint types. This results in a relatively smaller coupling size which allows more couplings to be added without causing it to grow proportionately. There are several opportunities available in the market in terms of higher capacities and higher torque capacity. However, this requirement is often due to the need for longer joint life. Gear couplings are also power-intensive, resulting in the transmission of more torque per coupling space and mass consumed than other types.
