Universal Joint working principle

A universal joint, also known as a U-joint, is a mechanical joint that connects two shafts together at an angle. It is used to transmit torque and rotational motion between the two shafts, while allowing for some misalignment between them.

The working principle of a universal joint is based on the design of two yokes, which are connected by a cross-shaped center piece, also known as the spider. The yokes are positioned at 90-degree angles to each other, and each yoke is connected to a shaft.

As one of the shafts rotates, the spider rotates with it, and because the spider is connected to the other shaft through its other yoke, the second shaft also rotates. The angle between the two shafts can change as the spider rotates, allowing for some misalignment between the shafts.

In order to maintain the alignment of the joint and prevent excessive wear, lubrication is usually required. The lubrication also helps to reduce friction and heat generated during the operation of the joint.
